RED Digital Cinema’s DSMC concept (Digital Still and Motion Camera) allows owners to shoot both still and motion images with a single camera.
Their line of products focuses on not only the motion picture industry, but also high-end photography sectors such as fashion and graphics. We asked RED Digital Japan’s technical director, Hisashi Yamamoto, to assess the usability and color management workflow of their currently installed EIZO DuraVision FDH3601 and ColorEdge CG276 monitors.
Technical Director RED Digital Japan
Reasons for choosing EIZO DuraVision FDH3601
Mr. Yamamoto’s experience with EIZO ColorEdge LCD monitors dates back to before he joined RED Digital. His impression was that “the monitors are stable and show less color deterioration over the years. I can work confidently with the stable color and quality and feel reassured.”
“The EIZO DuraVision FDH3601 4K x 2K monitor is displayed in our showroom in Akasaka, Tokyo. The monitor is connected to a MacPro equipped with RED Digital's RED Rocket1acceleration card and a converter to input a 4K image on the screen using SDI to DisplayPort conversion. The DuraVision FDH3601 supports optional software that is also used to adjust the screen to the optimal settings.”
“There have already been many opportunities for clients using our RED ONE digital camera to come and see images displayed on a 4K monitor. Many of them expressed their pleasant surprise at details like skin textures and individual strands of hair that are reproduced on the FDH3601. “ He adds, “Standard monitors cannot reproduce details to the degree that the DuraVision FDH3601 4K monitor can, making it possible to see many minute details for the first time.”
Reasons for choosing EIZO ColorEdge CG276
RED Digital Japan’s Akasaka showroom also displays a Windows editing workstation equipped with EIZO’s professional series color management LCD monitor, the ColorEdge CG276. Images are displayed using a connection between the graphics board and DisplayPort. The ColorEdge CG276 is a 27-inch monitor with a resolution of 2560 x 1440. Downscaled 4K x 2K display has been made possible with this monitor.
Mr. Yamamoto says, “I recommend working with sRGB, as working with the file-based contents is quickly advancing. It is becoming more widespread to manage and connect to an sRGB based monitor (with a color temperature of 6500K and gamma of 2.2). “
“Previously, it used to be enough to simply present the contents. However, with advancements in DVD, Blu-Ray, and especially the Web, working in sRGB has become standard. Having a stable sRGB ColorEdge monitor made it simple to create an environment for adjusting the colors of media directly so they can be displayed the same no matter where they are viewed. “
He concludes, “Our REDRAY PLAYER2 makes it possible to display and create 4K contents for a 4K display, so we can anticipate the further spread of this kind of technology in the future. Professionals who are already with high-precision materials can discover something new with EIZO’s stable ColorEdge and 4K (FDH3601) monitors.”
